TM&WL: Full series commissioned!

Tuesday, February 28th, 2006

Hurrah for comedy sanity. The BBC have commissioned a full series of That Mitchell And Webb Look, what we saw the pilot filming of, if you remember. It was well funny, innit, so we are very pleased to hear all about it. This means that they are doing another one of those warm-up gigs, like they did for the pilot, at The Drill Hall (our second home) on March 20th. Tickets are available from the BBC ticket site and cost fuck all. Which is nice. So any comedy fans reading this have no excuse not to go to a fantastic free night of comedy. They might even do Numberwang again!

That Mitchell and Webb Look warm up night
David Mitchell and Robert Webb give you a sneak preview of some of the sketches for the forthcoming BBC2 series of That Mitchell and Webb Look.

It’ll be a night of bold new sketches about everything from a lunatic in a box to brushing your tongue and a chance to meet some old favourites in new situations, including the snooker commentators and TV presenter Jason’s thrilling game show “The Hole in the Ring”.

Date(s) of show: March 20th
Studio doors open: 8.15pm
Age Limit: Those under 14 years of age will not be admitted.
Venue: Drill Hall

Product placement: Peep Show

Monday, February 20th, 2006

You gotta love Peep Show. It’s what turned most people onto the whole M&W lifestyle choice and it’s got that neurotic thing going on that us internet geeks love for some reason. Peep Show is a Channel 4 series and began in 2003 but you already know that. Let’s just say that it’s very very funny and not just because it has Johnson in it. It’s also not just funny because of that “brooming” incident or when Mark didn’t really take those drugs. Those things certainly help though.

You can purchase series 1 if you click here. Go on!

You can purchase series 2 if you click here!

Series 3 DVD is on its way…

Peep Show soundboard is fun fun fun and to be found here.

Product placement: The Mitchell And Webb Situation

Wednesday, February 15th, 2006

The Mitchell And Webb Situation was on Play UK (home of Rock Profile, yay!) in 2001 and was alright, I suppose. It’s on a shiny DVD if you want to buy it and I did indeed purchase it but it gave me a fair amount of “meh”s when watching it. Apart from the anarchists and the “my wife” bits. It did grow on me when we saw some of it again at the BBC before the TMAWL filming so I may give it another go in the future if my wife allows me to do so…

It’s got Olivia Colman in it. That alone makes it an essential purchase.

Interlude: Footlights and that…

Friday, February 10th, 2006

That Mitchell and Webb are a bit posh. This is hardly a secret as lots of comedy personnel are also fans of the sun-dreied tomato and pesto lifestyle. Because of their posh and funny status they must have gone to Cambridge and been involved in that Footlights thing, right? Of course. It supplied posh funny people to the telly box world every blinkin’ year! A whole load of Pythons and Goodies were there, as was sci-fi comedy writer Douglas Adams. In the early 1980s it made Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Emma Thompson and Tony Slattery and then in the 1990s it made a lot of people with ties to That Mitchell And Webb Look.

e.g.
1991: Cambridge Underground. Cast: Nick Ball, Mark Evans, James Hickish, Sue Perkins
Written by: The cast and director, David Farr, Murray Gold, Steve Hudson, Ol Parker.

1993: Some Wood And A Pie. Cast: Georgie Bevan, Katie Breathwick, Mark Evans, Daniel Mazer, William Sutcliffe, Robert Thorogood. Written by: The cast, James Bourne, James Bachman.

1994: The Barracuda Jazz Option. Cast: James Bachman, Katie Breathwick, Liz Hurran, Daniel Mazer, Robert Webb. Director: Mark Evans.

1995: Fall From Grace. Cast: Matthew Holness, David Mitchell, Tamsin Stanley, Claire Taylor, Jonathan Taylor, Robert Webb (also Vice-president of the committe). Written by: The cast and director, Leila Hackett. Additional material: Charlie Hartill, Linda Robertson, Gus Brown, Richard Grocock, Lucy Montgomery. Director: James Bachman.

1996: Rainbow Stranglers. Cast: Ali Chalmers, Leila Hackett, Matthew Holness, David Mitchell (also President of the committee) , Lucy Montgomery. Written by: The cast and director, James Bachman, Jonathan Taylor. Additional material: Gaby Kruger, Matthew Green, Charles Dean, Tom Hilton, Earl Spencer-Brown, Richard Grocock, Hannah Roberts, Richard Ayoade, Jerome Smith, Sarah Moule, Rachel Cammack. Director: Robert Webb.

Now we know…

Comedy dole queue?

Saturday, February 4th, 2006

Poor old comedy man supreme Robert Webb. I only found out a week ago that Peep Show had been cancelled and now I can add The Smoking Room to that list. Just as the long-delayed DVD of its first series arrived in the post, too! Talk about bad timing! I hope Ben Elton’s ludicrously unamusing sitcom named Blessed doesn’t get resommissioned or Mr Webb may feel obliged to reprise his role in that. I hope not.

Still, this gives me even more reasons why the BBC must make an entire series of That Mitchell And Webb Look! Wake up, BBC!

The Smoking Room has now closed. Boo hiss boo to health and safety!
