That Playing Shop Update

Wednesday, June 10th, 2009

More stuff. Bloody hell!

From Chortle:

Mitchell and Webb can their own sitcom
…even though BBC wanted it

Michell & Webb have ditched their own sitcom – even though the BBC wanted it.

The duo recorded a pilot of the show, called Playing Shop, which the corporation liked enough to order a full series. However, the two comics weren’t happy with it and turned down the commission – promising to polish the script for another pilot. The premise revolves around two friends trying to start a business after being made redundant, but Webb said: ‘It was too close to Peep Show. We wanted to rejig it.’

In the interview with the Daily Telegraph, Mitchell added: ‘I think we made the characters too scuzzy and low-rent. It was our natural inclination to write these absolute losers’ Should the BBC like the rejigged version, Playing Shop should hit screens at the end of 2010. ‘Comedy is very heavily scrutinised in the press but there’s a good reason for that: people really give a damn about it,’ Mitchell said. ‘When a sketch show or sitcom is deemed not to be very good people take that personally. That’s the downside. The upside is that we live in a country that really cares about comedy and when it works, my God they love it.’

Please remain indoors.

TMWS4 Recording Two: "Fat Facts" 8th June 2009

Week 2 of 3: No husband this time but had a trip to Forbidden Planet for new comic (Mike Carey and Peter Gross’ the Unwritten, v good), books (Terry Moore’s Echo 2 and the latest Buffy Season 8 graphic novels plus a new Doctor Who Short Trips compilation) , a nice cake, showing an old friend what Muji was, meeting a new friend for the first time, joining the queue even though we didn’t have to last week (guestlist la-di-dah) , talking a lot about comedy, meeting one of our favourite writers (again) on the way in, no time to linger in the bar … and on with the show!

This week: Starring Olivia Colman (with short blond hair)! Like Sir Alan they are going to mix it up a bit with Sarah Hadland. Next week is also a Colman session. We were in row 5 this time and there were a few empty seats. Only just got in on time due to the unique way the BBC Radio Theatre is like an airport. Only no planes…

Episode 1 or Session 1:
Bank customer 1: Withdrawl. Very John Finnemore-y or so we thought.
Inspector tortoise. Great absurd one.
Starring Michael Sheen.
Question Time.
London bus passengers.
Pretend bears.
Bank customer 2: Balance.
Rapunzel… and Barry.
Village shop Muji franchise. Spooky reappearance of Muji in our day. Great.
Common Denominator Magazine.
Battersea Ghost Home.
Windsor Twilight Funeral Insurance.
Who’s the Winner? Somebody has been amused at the Deal Or No Deal ‘gameplans.’
Easter Island God returns.

Episode 2 or Session 2:
Brown Orthopaedic Supplies’ stargate 1: Bin.
Soldier’s mum on phone.
Naming Claire Cooper star (in the sky).
Sharing the Jesus love.
Pinocchio 1: Foster parents. Obligatory funny silly voice from Rob.
Particle Accelerator fatal error.
Unadventurous shepherds.
Brown Orthopaedic Supplies’ stargate 2: Toilet.
Pinocchio 2: Picnic.
Ghost haunting man who murdered him.
Make Me A Celebrity Centaur. The annual reality show sketch but good.
Amateur radio club: Giant mechanical retro DJs.
Pinocchio 3: Wood chipper.
Brown Orthopaedic Supplies’ stargate 3: Alien visitor.
Zorro Training… and Lulu.

We had a chat with Rob,David and James afterwards, mostly about the advance reviews for the new series of Look (starting this Thursday) being good, and how much more fun the radio recordings seem. Lot less pressure than at those TV centre evenings! Rob invited us along to the Yorkshire Grey for a drink…

… and then we went home.

It’s on Radio 4 in September… and it’s very very funny.

That G2 Interview

Monday, June 8th, 2009

Blimey it’s all go in Mitchell and Webb fan world this week!

Guardian G2 has David on the front today. Maybe that will help me take my mind off the realfe “are we the baddies?” who certain sections of the Great British Voting Public seem to think hold the answers.

“That telly is old, but it basically completely works, and I feel immensely smug about that fact. I mean, it’s colour and everything. And it does have a remote, yes. The only feature it doesn’t have – apart from widescreen and HD and everything else – is it’s pre-Teletext. But Teletext has come and gone, so you see it doesn’t matter! Slightly to my shame,” he adds, smiling, “I do have a fax – and that’s something I could have bypassed altogether as well. Who’s buying faxes now? Fools!”

“There’s lots of famous comedians I get on with very well,” he says, “but I’m slightly embarrassed about broaching the ‘So, shall we be friends now?’ bit. And I worry that I’ve been both over-familiar, and that I’ve been unfriendly. There are lots of comedians who I’d happily go for a pint with, but I feel a bit weird. It’s nonsensical really, because so many of my friends are people I know from doing comedy with at university. But now I feel befriending people I do comedy with is shallow, because it’s people Off The Telly talking to other people Off The Telly, as if you don’t want to talk to anyone who isn’t Off The Telly. But then,” he reasons, looking bemused, “the people I’ve always befriended are the people I’ve done comedy with.”

Mitchell & Webb star in “Impasse”. A narrow country lane has no room for two vehicles to pass. Two vehicles meet head on. But which one is going to back up?
